Privacy Policy

Ari: Learn Hebrew (“the app”) is a Hebrew-learning app made by Alon Jacob (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what information the app uses, where it goes, and what you can do about it. It covers the app on iPhone and iPad, and this website.
The short version
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics tools, and we never sell your information.
- Your lessons, streak, words and settings stay on your iPhone.
- Ari chat sends what you type, and what you’re learning, to OpenAI to write Ari’s replies, and only after you turn chat on.
- For learners under 13, nothing leaves the iPhone.
- You can delete everything at any time: Settings › Account › Delete account & data.
1. What stays on your iPhone
Most of the app works without sending anything anywhere. These stay on your iPhone, where we can’t see them:
- your progress: lessons and stories finished, XP, streak, gems, the words you’ve learned and the ones you practise;
- your settings: daily goal, reminder time, how the app talks to you (he or she), age group, sound;
- Ari’s closet, and your Ari chat history;
- your practice reminders, which iOS schedules on the iPhone itself.
Deleting the app deletes all of this.
2. What leaves your iPhone, and why
Ari chat (only if you turn it on; not for learners under 13)
Ari is an AI. When you send Ari a message, the app sends it over an encrypted connection to our server, which passes it to OpenAI to write Ari’s reply. Each time, it sends:
- your message and up to 16 earlier messages from the same chat;
- what you’re learning, so Ari can answer at your level: where you are in the course, the Hebrew you know, the lessons, games and stories you did lately and roughly when, what you got wrong in them, your streak, your age group (13 to 17, or adult), whether the app talks to you as he or she, and whether you read without vowel marks.
It never sends your name, email, Apple Account, contacts, location or anything that identifies your iPhone.
The first time you send a message, the app creates an anonymous account on our server: a random ID with no name or email, kept in your iPhone’s Keychain. We use it to count your free messages (10 a day), to slow down abuse, and to know whether you have Ari Super. We keep each day’s count for 30 days, and delete the ID, with everything kept for it, once it has gone 30 days without being used. We don’t store the text of your messages.
OpenAI uses your messages only to write the reply. It doesn’t use them to train its AI, and it keeps them for up to 30 days to detect misuse (longer only if the law requires it), then deletes them.
If you report one of Ari’s replies, we receive that reply, your message before it and the time, and keep them for up to 90 days to review them and make Ari safer.
You can turn chat off at any time in Settings › Ari chat, and nothing more is sent. Settings › Ari chat › Clear chat history removes the chat from your iPhone.
Ari Super
Apple handles every payment; we never see your card or bank details. When you chat with Ari, the app sends our server the App Store’s signed record of your subscription, and Apple tells our server when it renews, changes or is refunded: which plan, when it started and when it renews or ends, and Apple’s ID for it. We check Apple’s signature and use the record to give you Super in Ari chat. We keep it while your account shows it, and delete it a week after none does.
When you email us
We get your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to answer you, and delete it within two years.
Server logs
Our hosting provider records technical details of each request to our server, including the IP address, the time and whether it worked. These logs are for security and fixing problems, and are deleted within 28 days.
3. Who we share it with
Only these companies, and only to run the app for you. Each is bound by a data processing agreement:
- Supabase hosts our server and database, in the United States (North Virginia).
- OpenAI writes Ari’s replies (Ari chat only).
- Apple handles purchases, under its own privacy policy.
We don’t sell or share personal information for advertising, and we don’t use data brokers. We would disclose information only if the law required it, or to protect someone’s safety.
4. Children and families
The app is for every age. When you set it up, the app asks who’s learning and how old they are, or, on recent versions of iOS, uses the age range your iPhone shares through Apple. We keep only the age group (under 13, 13 to 17, or 18 and over).
- Under 13: Ari chat is switched off, so nothing about your child leaves the iPhone. Settings and purchases sit behind a grown-up check. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if we learn that we have, we delete it.
- 13 to 17: teens can turn on Ari chat after reading how it works. A parent can turn it off in Settings, or ask us to delete their teen’s data.
- Purchases by children go through Apple, including Ask to Buy where a family has set it up.
Parents can contact us at any time at support@arihebrew.com.
5. Your choices and rights
- Delete everything: Settings › Account › Delete account & data deletes your data from the iPhone and from our server straight away. If you saved your progress with Apple, it also cuts the app’s link to your Apple Account. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel Ari Super; cancel it in Settings › Manage subscription.
- Turn things off: Ari chat and reminders each have their own switch in Settings.
- See, copy or correct your data: email us and we’ll answer within 30 days.
- In the EU and UK: we use your information to provide the app and Ari Super (contract), to run Ari chat (your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings), and to keep the service secure (legitimate interests). You can also object, ask us to limit how we use your data, or complain to your data protection authority.
- In California: you can ask what we hold and ask us to delete it. We don’t sell or share personal information, and we won’t treat you differently for using your rights.
6. Keeping it safe
Everything travels over encrypted connections. The chat account’s key stays in your iPhone’s Keychain, on that device only. Our database only lets each account reach its own rows. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we hold small, and delete it on the schedules above.
7. Where your data is processed
Our server is in the United States. If you live elsewhere, your information is processed there, under our processors’ data processing terms, including the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses where they’re needed.
8. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If we ever change what Ari chat sends, or who it goes to, the app will ask you again before sending anything.
